Doneva Mae Cleland was the daughter of Lester and Mary (Logie) Cleland, born Aug. 1, 1929 in Kingsley. On Feb. 28, 2017 she left the confinement of an uncooperative body bound for her next adventure.
Lester and Mary were entrepreneurs and traveled extensively. Doneva was able to visit the vast expanses of the United States as a child and from her stories, they thoroughly enjoyed the West. She was able to continue her love of travel after her retirement.
Doneva retired from the State Hospital in Traverse City. Prior to that she and Delbert owned and operated a mercantile and ice cream parlor in Buckley until the late 1950s when a fire destroyed several buildings. She also served as mayor of Buckley.
She was married to Dana Delbert Lance on Feb. 14, 1948 until his death in 1990. In 1993 she married James R. Smithson in Lakeland, Florida. After Jim passed away in 2007 she moved back to Buckley and then Traverse City.
Doneva was always very active, whether at work, gardening, cooking, golfing, traveling or socializing. She had a great group of friends, and they always enjoyed their times together. I wish we would have written down some of those stories!
Doneva is survived by her son, Dana C. Lance, and daughter-in-law, Mary Jo; three grandchildren, Jeffery, Jenifer and Eric; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and bonus great-grandchildren. She will be remembered fondly by her two stepchildren, Carolee Packard and James Smithson and their families.
Thank you to the staff at Orchard Creek Supportive Care for their kindness and loving, quality care for Doneva.
Interment at Cornell Cemetery in Buckley will be at a later date.
Memorial donations may be directed to the AmVets Post #120, 3669 N. Nine Road, Mesick, MI 49668.
