George Sikorski, 95, a 45-year resident of Empire and formerly of Detroit, died Thursday, Sept. 7, in Traverse City. He was born on Sept. 20, 1921 in Detroit to the late William and Lena (Olariu) Sikorski, of Detroit.
George was retired from Michigan Bell and led an active life in construction and repair in Leelanau and Beulah counties.
Many will remember him as a long term member of the Empire Fire Department, including a stint on the Fire Board or as the Empire Township constable.
In November 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and served in the American and Pacific Theaters of World War II. In March 1946 he was honorably discharged and returned to civilian life and Michigan Bell.
He is survived by his son, Jay (Sindi) Sikorski, of Greensboro, Maryland; granddaughter, Rachel (Jack) Smith, of Felton, Delaware; grandson, Will Sikorski, of Shelby; great-grandson, Hudson Richardson, of Shelby; and niece, Donna Marshall, of Detroit.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Ruth; and many friends and acquaintances.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
