Glenn Ivan Ruggles, husband, father, grandfather, age 86, of Commerce Township, passed away while peacefully surrounded by family Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017. He was born to Beryl and Christena Ruggles in Grand Blanc Oct. 20, 1930.
Glenn is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Margaret "Margee" (nee Vermeersch); sister, Margaret Walton; children, Scott (Janet), Julie (Gary) Filipic, Tim (Peggy), Suzy, Angela (Albert) Shay and Marissa Penrod; and 14 beautiful grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary; and brothers, Charles and Eugene.
Glenn was a proud graduate of Elk Rapids High School. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.
Glenn earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Detroit and later received a master's degree in education. A beloved teacher, Glenn taught history for 35 years at Walled Lake Central High School. He is remembered fondly by students over four decades and was particularly proud of his founding of the Model United Nations program at Walled Lake Central.
Glenn was dedicated to family and friends, especially enjoying summer days spent with family on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. He was a renowned oral historian who published numerous books and produced several movies on Michigan history.
A funeral Mass will take place at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9086 Hutchins Road (at Union Lake Road), Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m., and will lie in state from 10 a.m. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake (three blocks south of Maple Road), Monday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 9 p.m., with a vigil service with memory sharing at 7 p.m. Glenn will be laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
