Henry and Lillian's Story
A rich and loving 67 years of marriage culminated in a remarkable ending as Henry and Lillian ("Hank" and "Lil") Bosma passed away hours apart on the very same day, Monday, June 19, 2017. The final short days of both of their lives were encircled with family love from their children and grandchildren as gratitude for their lives and their courage at the end filled all of our hearts.
Lillian was born in Lyons, Illinois, on July 26, 1928 to Czech immigrants. She grew up with one older brother, George, who died in World War II. Lillian spent two years studying at Drake University and worked at Sunbeam before she met Hank.
Hank was born in Berwyn, Illinois, on Nov. 9, 1921 to Dutch immigrants. He grew up in a Dutch Reformed household with two older sisters, Gertrude "Trudy" and Alice. He joined the U.S. Army, became an officer and was stationed in Trinidad during World War II. Hank obtained a business degree from Walton School of Commerce, became a systems analyst and eventually a comptroller and manager.
In 1949, a blind date arranged by two of their friends brought them together; the attraction was strong and mutual, and they were married six months later. Soon they welcomed three daughters, Patty, Janet and Judy; Lillian became a joyful and enthusiastic mother and homemaker. With Hank's job as a systems analyst, the family moved from Chicago to Buffalo, New York, in 1962 and to Cleveland in 1969. When the girls were teenagers, Lillian fulfilled her love of the medical world as a medical secretary and office manager. With their strong work ethic and belief in the value of education, they provided for all three daughters to proudly obtain college degrees and beyond.
After their daughters grew up, married and had children, and after Hank's retirement, the Bosmas moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be closer to their daughter, Janet, and grandson, Zachary. They enjoyed traveling, bowling in a league, swimming and doting on all of their five grandchildren. Hank volunteered doing taxes at H&R Block and Lillian continued sewing, quilting, needlework and her avid love of reading.
In 2009, the Bosmas moved to Northern Michigan to be closer to their daughter, Judy. Hank and Lil were proud of their independence and enjoyed living at Cedar Creek Senior Apartments for the last eight years. They loved family more than anything and their memory lives on in all of us: daughter, Patricia, granddaughter, Meredith (John), and great-granddaughter; daughter, Janet, and grandson, Zachary; daughter, Judy Bosma (Jim Olson), and granddaughters Alison (Greg), Lindsey (James) and Natalie.
