Irene Sylvia Martin, age 87, passed away June 1, 2017 in Jackson after battling a long illness. Irene was born on June 11, 1929 in Ironwood to Walter and Auni Wiemeri.
Irene was predeceased by husband, Melvin Martin; daughter, Sharon; and son, Thomas.
She is survived by her children, Christine Adomitis, Kenneth, Jerome, Janice and Brian; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Irene and Mel raised their family of seven in Pontiac and moved to Traverse City in 1992 after retirement.
Irene worked in the Pontiac Public School system to retirement.
She stayed active in Traverse City with her hobbies of gardening and baking, making sure the neighborhood children who frequently visited had home-baked cookies.
She was a member of the Traverse City Figure Skating Club and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
There wasn't a sport or event she didn't love if her children were involved. She was the definition of a "soccer" mom, never missing events and always offering praise and encouragement. Irene was an avid MSU football, basketball and Detroit Tigers fan, rarely missing televised games and made the most of attending Tigers games with her family.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 630 W. Silver Lake South, Traverse City, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at 11 a.m., with a luncheon to celebrate Irene's life to follow. Interment will be a family gathering at Oakwood Catholic Cemetery in Traverse City immediately after the luncheon. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
The Martin family wishes to extend thanks to the University of Michigan Geriatrics Center and the staff of Great Lakes Caring Hospice and RidgeCrest Health Campus for Irene's care during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, at www.alz.org/mglc.
