Jack David Priest, 77, of Elmwood Township, died Monday, April 24, 2017 at Munson Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was born Sept. 11, 1939 in Suttons Bay Township, the son of Earl Priest and Helen (Leabo) Priest. On Sept. 26, 2012 at the Leelanau County Government Center he married Deborah Jean (Dane) Priest, who survives.
Jack learned construction from the age of 15 and was a proud Suttons Bay Norseman, class of 1958.
After graduation he served his country in the U.S. Army.
He returned home and for decades owned and operated a longtime Leelanau County landmark, Treasure Cove Party Store. To locals it was known as Jack's party store and today it is the Shady Lane Market. Jack was a natural people-person and many remember Jack at the store register.
His family has fond memories of taking the pop-up camper to the Birch Point Camp grounds in Lake Leelanau. Jack enjoyed trips over the Mackinaw Bridge visiting the Upper Peninsula and visiting casinos.
Jack loved his pets, his dogs and cats. He enjoyed family gatherings and was a natural-born teaser who loved all children; he became grandpa to all the little kids he met.
The family would like to thank the (A-3) cardiac unit of Munson Medical Center, the nurses, doctors and aides for their extreme kindness and expert care during Jack's long journey to heaven.
Jack is survived by his wife, Deborah; two children, Pam Priest and Jeff Priest; two stepchildren, Ryan (Bel) Simmons and Aaron Simmons; and two sisters, Lorraine (Joe) Lamie and Cleo (Gordon) Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, April 28, at 11 a.m., with family greeting friends one hour prior, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Traverse City. Father Kenneth Stachnik will serve as celebrant. Private family burial in St. Michael's Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, c/o Building Fund, 1025 S. Union St., Traverse City, MI 49684; Father Fred Foundation, 826 Hastings, Traverse City, MI 49686; and/or Mass Intentions.
