James Arland "Arlie" Sanborn, age 95 years, of Hudson, formerly of Cheboygan, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Arkansas. He was born on Jan. 5, 1922 in Traverse City, the son of Morgan and Gladys (Boone) Sanborn.
Arlie graduated from Traverse City High School in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy and was a SeaBee serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Arlie married Victoria C. Niemiec on June 7, 1947 in Traverse City. She preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 2013.
He worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for 40 years, retiring in 1980.
Arlie was a member of Hannan-Colvin Post #180 American Legion of Hudson, VFW in Cheboygan, DAV in Arizona, Kiwanis Club in Cheboygan, St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cheboygan and Hudson First United Methodist Church in Hudson.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and especially spending time with his family.
Surviving are two children, Michael (JoAnn) Sanborn, of Hudson, and Jackie (Henry) Peets, of Maumelle, Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Sanborn, of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren, Sarah, Katherine, James J. (Amy), David Sanborn and Jacob Peets; sister, Joan Chamberlain, of Grand Rapids; brothers-in-law, Edward Niemiec, of Manistee, Jerome Niemiec, of Scottville, and Henry (Joanne) Niemiec, of Scottville; and sister-in-law, Emily Froehlich, of Lakewood, California; special niece, Cindy Chamberlain; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Jeffery Sanborn; parents; brothers-in-law, Robert Chamberlain, Raymond and Bronzil Niemiec; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Forbes.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 at the Hudson First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Brad Luck officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment of cremains will take place in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City at a later date.
