James "Jim" "Butch" John Swartout Jr., 74, of Interlochen, died Monday, March 13, 2017 at home with his family by his side. He was born Aug. 31, 1942 in Detroit, the son of James and Clara (Roza) Swartout Sr.
Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a mechanic with Attack Squadron 112. He was a member of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 in Traverse City.
Jim was a skilled craftsman. He worked as a cabinet maker and carpenter and could often be found working in his garage. When he lived in Lake Leelanau he owned and operated Lakeview Hills Resort.
Jim liked to keep busy. When he wasn't busy working he could often be found hunting, fishing or playing golf. He loved the water and took advantage of every opportunity he had to go boating.
The most important thing in Jim's life was his family. He will be remembered as a hardworking husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who left this earth a better place.
Jim is survived by his children, Yvonne (Clay) Six, of Muskegon, James "Jim" (Brenda) Swartout, of Williston, North Dakota, and Gregory Swartout, of Interlochen; his grandchildren, Jessica Rosa, Mike Doberstein, Rheanna Doberstein, Alex Swartout, Austin Swartout, Morgan Swartout, Nick Swartout, Ciara (Zach) Wendels, Karson Wigness and Jarek Wigness; his great-grandchildren, Riley Rosa, Oliver Rosa and Josh Swartout; his significant other, Donna Dalson; Donna's children, Matt (Val) Dalson and Jason (Heather) Dalson; Donna's grandchildren, Gabby and Kade Dalson; his siblings, Donna Jean (Larry) Rector, of Brethren, Georgette Sika, of Traverse City, Julia (Lynn Churchvara) Swartout, of Royal Oak, and William (Rosemarie) Swartout, of Interlochen; his brother-in-law, Bill Husby, of Traverse City; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
On Aug. 24, 1963 Jim married Eileen Donnelly, who preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Donald Swartout and Susan Husby.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Navy and the Cherryland VFW Post #2780. A luncheon will follow at the Interlochen Eagles Aerie #3503.
