Janet Gwinn Rivett, age 82, of Buckley, formerly of Lapeer, died Friday, May 5, 2017.
Mrs. Rivett is survived by her husband, Leo Rivett, of Buckley; children, Todd (Julie Booth) Burt, of Bailey, Colorado, Erin (Dan) Burt Ibele, of Petoskey, and Eric (Tara) Burt, of Buckley; stepdaughters, Judith (John) Cummins, of Pontiac, and Connie (Van) Salmond, of Lapeer; daughter-in-law, Jan Burt, of Mosca, Colorado; grandchildren, Daniel Ibele, Austin Burt, Brendan Burt and Audrey Burt; many step grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Jeaneen June, of Lapeer.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, W. Austin and Jean (Shepherd) Gwinn; and brother, Joseph Gwinn.
Janet was a trailblazer for women in business. In the '70s she started selling cosmetics for Vanda Beauty Counselors and soon was awarded her own distributorship, Erin Distributors, named after her daughter. She then went to work for Sentry Insurance, being the first female to earn the Distinguished Sales Person Award. Following a nearly 20-year career with Sentry and a brief retirement, Janet reentered the workforce as executive director of the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce. In 1998 Janet and Leo moved north to Buckley to be close to the grandchildren.
Janet was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lapeer, later attending Buckley Wayside Chapel, where she served as president of the church board and started a local food pantry. She especially loved putting together Christmas baskets for the less fortunate children in the area.
Janet loved her family and friends and received great joy in helping others.
The family is grateful to the University of Michigan ALS Clinic, ALS of Michigan, Munson Home Health Hospice of Traverse City and all her caregivers and nurses for their love and care for Janet.
Janet was truly the family matriarch and will be missed dearly.
