Jeffery's Story

Text size

Jeffery Joseph Summers entered into the loving arms of the Father on June 11, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family. Jeff lived with cancer for three years, never letting it slow him down; never missing a day of work; never complaining, and continuing to be the man who we all knew and loved. Jeff was born on February 24,1964, in Detroit, MI, to Robert and Elaine (Monday) Summers. He married Leslie Susan (Vermetten) in Traverse City, MI, on June 20, 1992. They were truly the love of each other's lives and enjoyed over 40 years of friendship and fun. He devoted his life to raising their 3 sons Jeff, Joe, and Jake to be strong and honorable men. He was an avid skier, mountain biker, and hunter. He included his family in every part of his life providing them with adventure, wisdom, and love. As part of the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools community Jeff supported Leslie and their boys in any way he could with his humble and generous attitude. His love of skiing, combined with his servant heart, led him to join the National Ski Patrol, primarily serving at Mt. Holiday. Jeff was a licensed master plumber, but this "Jeff"-of-all-Trades used his time and talents to help whomever and whenever needed.

Jeff is survived by his his wife Leslie and their boys Jeffery Joseph, Jr., Joseph Robert (and his sweetheart Isabelle Reamer), and Jacob Morris; his father Bob and his wife Evie, his mother Elaine, his sister Linda (Jeffrey) Smith, and their children Trevor (Jennifer), Cara, Audrey, and Wyatt (Brittany Morton), his sister Laura Gruye (Brett McGraw), and her children Emma and Dylan; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Matthew and Susan Vermetten and their children Kristen, Meagan, and William; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Lisa Wiley and their children Lydia (Eamon) Smith and baby Winston, Laura (Wilson) Duty, Lillian (Benjamin) Swan, and Claire Wiley (Jacob Grove), and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

We will forever miss this man of great integrity whose humor touched all who knew him. He loved his God, his family, his country, and his freedom and defended these ideals passionately.

Even Jeff's last wishes were for others as he donated his body to medical research through Medcure. A funeral mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jeff's name to Mt. Holiday Ski Patrol, 25 Homestead Ct, Traverse City, MI, 49686.
