John S. Crosby, 104, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, passed away on June 30, 2017.
John was born in Plainwell as one of two children of Dr. John and Fanny Crosby. He was raised along with a sister by his mother after his father's death when he was an infant.
He attended Grand Rapids Junior College after receiving a loan for the tuition when the local bank closed its doors during the Great Depression. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in forestry.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China, Burma, India theater of the war. After his military service he worked for the U.S. Forest Service completing research on forest fires and publishing articles on the subject.
Upon his retirement he lived at Glen Lake and was involved in the area community. Later he moved to John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, Missouri, with his wife to be near family. In January 2013 he celebrated his 100th birthday with many family and friends. He was proud to reach this milestone in his life.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Crosby; his sister, Rachel Payne; and one child.
Surviving are his children, Dorothy Smith (Steve), of rural Gower, Missouri, Jane E. Pogue and John F. Crosby, of Liberty, Missouri, and Jean Petersen (Tom), of Burdickville. He has nine grandchildren, Sean Smith (Ashley), of Shawnee, Kansas, Emily Slaton (Rob), of Lake Waukomis, Missouri, Heather Smith, of Japan, John R. Crosby (Ann), of Leewood, Kansas, Erica Triebenbach (Kurt), of Rosemount, Minnesota, Jeff Cox (Sandra), of Kansas City, Missouri, Thomas Petersen (Jen), of Yankton, South Dakota, Blair Crosby (Marcie), of Hallsville, Missouri, and Jane Bolander (David), of Aberdeen, South Dakota; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW Third St., Lee's Summit, MO 64063. Visitation will be prior from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. A local funeral service at the Empire Methodist Church in Empire will be at 11 a.m., with visitation an hour prior to the service, on Monday, July 17, 2017. Burial will follow at the Empire Cemetery.
