June's Story

Text size

June was born July 12, 1924, to Ellsworth and Stella (Bacon) Joy in Joyfield Township, Benzonia. She attended Benzonia High School, where she met the love of her life, Harold Deering. She worked summers at the soda fountain in the Beulah Drug Company until her graduation in 1942.
World War II took Harold to serve with the U.S. Army Air Corps and June moved to Detroit to work as a secretary in a psychiatric office. After the war June moved back to Benzonia to await Harold's return from Europe.
After the war June and Harold were married on Feb. 16, 1946. The couple moved to Detroit, where Harold operated a Mobil gas station at 22925 Northwestern Highway.
In 1954 the couple, with three children, moved back to Benzonia into a house at 1109 Michigan Ave. By this time Harold had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Harold passed away in 1958 and June took up the mantle of single parent. She worked a few years at Burwood Industries in Traverse City. During this time she also attended County Normal in Frankfort, where she became certified to teach. She left Burwood and became a teacher at the last one-room schoolhouse in Benzonia before the County schools consolidated in 1963.
June then applied for a position with the Benzie County Department of Social Services and worked there until her retirement in 1986.
June was always active in church and community. A longtime member of the Benzonia First Congregational Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, she could often be seen working in the kitchen at numerous events.
In 1995 she moved to Michigan Shores Independent living complex in Frankfort, where she lived for 22 years.
June was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Joy; husband, Harold; parents, Ellsworth and Stella Joy; sisters, Katherine (Nugent) Joy and Crystal (Hill) Joy; and son-in-law, Leonard Case Jr.
She is survived by her brother, Doug Joy; sister, Gertrude (Chan) Spencer; her children, Brenda (Deering) Case, Norman and Barbara (Simon) Deering and Eddie Deering; grandchildren, Micheal Deering, Andy and Christy (Gaylord) Case, Amanda (Case) and Ashley Williford and Matthew and Ai (Inoue) Deering; nine great-grandchildren, Carson Leonard Case, Caleb James Case, Zachariah Wray Williford, Kaitlin Deering, Nathan Deering, Alexandra Deering, Ryosuke Edwin Deering, Akihiro Marshall Deering and Jigen Harold Deering; three great-great-grandchildren, Owen Deering, Justin Deering and Trevor Deering; and many loving nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation but a memorial service will be held at the Benzonia Congregational Church on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. The Reverend Patty Higgins will preside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, 901 Barber St., Benzonia, MI 49616.
