Martin's Story

Text size

Martin Franklin Hogerheide, 98, passed away June 25, 2017 at the Eden Center in Kalkaska. Martin was born on Oct. 9, 1918 on a farm in South Boardman.
Martin was a self-employed mechanic in South Boardman until 1951 when he moved his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He worked in Albuquerque at Jill's Bakery as the fleet manager of the bakery trucks, moving up to equipment manager where he was responsible for upkeep and repair on the bakery equipment.
In retirement his love of the area drew him back to South Boardman. Martin loved traveling with the love of his life, Evelyn, and meeting new people. They traveled to many places around the world, including Holland to explore his Dutch heritage, and made several trips to Alaska.
He was a wonderful reference to days gone by, as his memory was amazing and his stories were endless. His sense of humor and kindness were some of his most endearing traits, and anyone who was lucky enough to be around him when he was reminiscing would attest to that.
Martin loved his family, taking drives down back country roads in his GMC Tracker, coffee with his buddies, chocolate cherry cake, strawberry shortcake and homemade ice cream.
Martin is survived by his brother, Merwin Hogerheide (Blanche); daughters, Doris Wagoner (Jerry) and Wendy Hogerheide; son, Dennis Hogerheide (Lois); grandchildren, David (Vicki), Derek (Susie), Jeff (Cheryl), Carrie (Dave), Christianna (Jose) and Scott (Karen); great-grandchildren, Kyle, Makenna, Trent, Laney, Shauna, Michael, Daniel, Kortney, Cheyanne, Colton, Alexandria and Josiah; and great-great-grandchildren, Rhianna, Aiden, Kraig and Kole.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn (Lamphear) Hogerheide; his son, Kirk Hogerheide; brothers, Carl Hogerheide (Grace) and Eman Hogerheide Jr. (June); and his parents, Eman Hogerheide Sr. and Edna (Young) Hogerheide.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday July 2, 2017 at the Kalkaska Funeral Home, with visitation at noon and celebration of life service at 1 p.m. A luncheon will be held at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church immediately following the service.
Arrangements are entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
