Murrel's Story

Murrel "Bud" Johnson, 91, of Duck Lake Peninsula, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017 with the love of his life, Doneva (Weidenhamer), and his family at his side. Bud was born on April 8, 1926 in Interlochen to the late Mearon and Aletha (Pratt) Johnson. He is survived by one brother, Kenneth (Betty) Johnson, and was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Vera (Zelen) Johnson and Marie Johnson.
Bud graduated from Traverse City High School in 1944. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy Seal in the Southwest Pacific.
After returning home Bud worked in the building trades and owned his own construction company.
When he was not working he loved to be outdoors hunting and fishing.
Bud is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Doneva; two sons and a daughter, Steven (Shirley) Johnson, of Lake Ann, Paul (Cathy) Johnson, of Harrison, and Linda (Jim) Jordan, of Holland. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service honoring Bud will take place at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1023 S. Division St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Pastor Richard Rice will officiate. Burial will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy, Cherryland VFW Post 2780 and American Legion Post 35.
