Norma (Barkley) Greer, widow of James "Jim" Cunningham Greer, of Jackson, Tennessee, formerly Elk Rapids, passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2017 in her home at the age of 89.
Norma May Barkley was born on July 19, 1927 to Erle and May (Hays) Barkley in Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa. She was the oldest of four, with her two sisters, Barbara and Jean, and her brother, Keith.
Norma and Jim Greer were married on Aug. 19, 1949 in Grinnell, Iowa, and they raised four children, Mark, Chris, Catherine and Anne during Jim's 21-year career in the U.S. Navy. Upon Jim's retirement from the Navy the family moved to Elk Rapids for 21 years and then to Jackson, Tennessee, in 1992, where Norma was a dedicated congregant for 25 years at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Erle and May Barkley; her son, Mark; and her husband, Jim.
Norma's memory will be cherished by her three children and their spouses, Christopher (Michal Cohen) Greer, of Austin, Texas, Catherine (Matt McClelland) Greer, of Oakland, California, and Anne (Michael) Armour, of Spring Lake. She will also be remembered with great love and appreciation by her six grandchildren, Brooks (Chad) Wellmon, Jennifer (John) Steele, Matthew (Rachel) Greer, Benjamin Armour, Mark Armour and Meredith Armour; as well as six (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Norma will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jackson, Tennessee, at 11 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2017. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. and will continue until service time in the Commons of St. Luke's.
The family requests that memorial contributions in memory of Norma be made to Redemption Road Horse Rescue, 130 Cooper Anderson Road, Jackson, TN 38305.
