Paul J. Schettek, 94, of Maple City, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born March 22, 1923 to John and Helen (Osie) Schettek in Maple City. He was the second youngest of 10. When Paul was young his father passed away, which forced him to assume many responsibilities of an older person.
In his early years he worked on the family farm and at a local saw mill. Later he worked at Cluff Well Drilling and Concrete Service before retiring in 1985.
Paul married Beatrice "Arlene" Fritz on June 1, 1957, and together they celebrated over 60 years of marriage. He and Arlene raised five children and were grandparents to four grandchildren.
Paul enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood, ice fishing on Little Glen Lake, enjoying coffee and chewing the fat with his buddies at the local gas station. He also liked circling the neighborhood in his pick up truck with Chet (the dog). He was fond of the family farm and didn't like being away for more than a day or so. Later, while living at the Pavilions, he looked forward to Bingo Tuesday.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice "Arlene" (Fritz) Schettek; children, Robert (Deborah) Schettek, Roger Schettek, Denise (Jim) Martin, Judy Schettek and James (Sherry) Schettek; sister, Mary Ellen Novak; sister-in-law, Irene Schettek; grandchildren, Stephanie, Eric, Kali and Tyler; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen (Osie) Schettek; sisters, Veronica Levenske, Lillian Peplinski, Josephine Lewis, Genevieve Peplinski and Tackla Schettek; and brothers, Alex, John and Clarence Schettek.
The family would like to especially thank the loving staff at the Pavilions for his exceptional care and for the kindness.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., at St. Rita Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cedar Fire Department, 8907 Railroad Ave., Cedar, MI 49621; the Grand Traverse Pavilions, 1000 Pavilions Court, Traverse City, MI 49684; or St. Rita Catholic Church, PO Box 75, Maple City, MI 49664.
