Ralph W. "Bill" Conant, loving husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2017. Born in Traverse City on Nov. 30, 1936, he was the son of the late Ralph and Lucille (Pelky) Conant, of Yuba.
He married Mariann Brown, of Elk Rapids, and she predeceased him. Together Bill and Mari raised four children, Patrick (Liz) Conant, of Bay City, Terri (Homer) Clauss, of Manistique, Heather Conant, of Bay City, and Ronald Conant, of Zilwaukee; and were blessed with nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia Sullivan, Nancy Conant and Thomas Conant.
Bill proudly served 26 years in the United States Coast Guard, retiring as Chief Boatswain Mate. His tours of duty included the Mediterranean Sea, several light houses and ships in the Great Lakes, a buoy tender in Alaska and Montauk Point Light House, New York.
Bill and Mari traveled to 49 of the 50 states, settling in Arcadia, Florida, having made many friends along their way. Bill was a loving man with the greatest of riches, God, family and friends. He will be sadly missed.
Bill's memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Wakeman Funeral Home, Inc., 1218 N. Michigan Ave. Friends are welcome to visit with the family from noon until the time of service. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Coast Guard and American Legion Post #439.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's honor to the Yuba Historical Society, Inc., 8265 Sayler Road, Williamsburg, MI 49690.
