Bob was preceded in death by his father, Earl Baker and his mother, Jean Berridge.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma; son, James; daughter, Laurie; their mother, Julie; stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren, as well as extended family and many friends who will miss him dearly.
Bob was a 1955 graduate of Highland Park High School before joining the U.S. Army and being stationed in Japan for 2 1/2 years. After the military, he attended Wayne State University, married Julie and had his two children, James and Laurie, before relocating to the Elk Rapids area. Bob re-enlisted in the Army and after proudly serving a total of 22 1/2 years, retired in 1997.
Upon retiring from the military, he moved to the family cottage on Platte Lake to rejoin his childhood friends and family. While living on Platte Lake he worked at Home Depot, married Wilma, and became a much-loved member of her family.
Bob is fondly remembered for his compassion and willingness to help others. He was an active member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, his support included travel to New Orleans to assist in the hurricane Katrina reconstruction efforts and local Habitat for Humanity projects. His passion was also evident through years working with and helping others at the Traverse City Home Depot, many of whom became dear friends, and most recently with the Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (BACN) community organization supporting those in need.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 8190 Lincoln Rd., Beulah, MI 49617.
