Robert's Story

Text size

Robert "Bob" James Jahnke, 90, passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, joining the love of his life, Carole, in heaven. Bob was born July 5, 1927 in Detroit to Carl and Theresa Jahnke.
He served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean War, during which he served on a LST.
While stationed on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, he met his best friend and soulmate, Carole Jensen. They were married on July 26, 1952 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Everett, Washington. Soon after, they moved to the Detroit area, ultimately raising their family in Livonia.
Bob worked briefly for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway before finding a home at Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 30 years as a seat belt engineer.
In 1989, after many years of vacationing in Northern Michigan, Bob and Carole realized their dream and moved to the home they built together in Lake Ann.
Bob was a gentle, loving man who was happiest when he was dancing with Carole. He will always be remembered for his laughter, unwavering faith in the Lord and his unconditional love for his family (not to mention his delicious hummers!).
Bob is survived by his sister-in-law, Sena Blubaugh (Jim), of Everett, Washington; his children, Debby Hoepner (Tim), of Livonia, Bryan Jahnke (Gladys Aleman), of Vieques, Puerto Rico, and Bob Jahnke, of Lake Ann; grandchildren, Jennifer Jahnke, of St. Clair Shores, James Jahnke (Nastassia), of Chicago, Illinois, Richard Jahnke (Stephanie Mabunga), of San Francisco, California, Megan Hoepner (Ciro Troncoso), of Orlando, Florida, and Chris Hoepner (Bridgette Nash), of Clinton Township; and great-grandchildren, Max and Jenna Lobbestael, of St. Clair Shores, Ethan Jahnke, of Chicago, Illinois, and Teddy Troncoso, of Orlando, Florida.
A memorial gathering will take place on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., at Celebration Lutheran Church, with lunch to follow.
Donations may be made in Bob's name to Celebration Lutheran Church, 39375 Joy Road, Westland, MI 48185.
