Robert "Bob" R. Lewis Jr., 90, of Omena.
Bob was born March 5, 1927 in New Haven, Connecticut to Robert and Lela Lewis. After serving in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, Bob obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan. He was a Professor of Physics at the University in Ann Arbor from 1958 until 1992.
Upon retirement, Bob and the love of his life, Trudy returned to Leelanau county where they lived in the woods on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay in Omena.
Bob had many interests and passions: guitar/singing, sailing, woodworking, bird watching and so much more. His greatest passion by far was his family- he was always present to help in any and every way possible, encouraging creative solutions to the many challenges life presents.
Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude "Trudy" Lewis; as well as their four children, Natalie (Jim) McClure, of Portola Valley, California, Susan Lewis (Gerald David), of Meyrin, Switzerland, Laura Gray, of Northport, Robert R Lewis, of Milan; four grandchildren, Samantha Gray, Jason Budd, Shannon McClure Mallory and Christopher Budd; two great-grandchildren, Bralyen Budd and Maize Budd.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northport Historical Society (NAHA) or the Inland Seas program. He will be sorely missed.
There will be a graveside service at the Northport Cemetery followed by a celebration of his life at Trinity Church, Northport on Sept. 4 starting at 11 a.m. We hope that you can join us to celebrate his wonderful life, and continue his legacy.
