Shirley's Story

Text size

Shirley Anne Crandall, formerly of Muskegon, Spring Lake, and Traverse City, died on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, after an extended illness. Shirley was born March 8, 1925, in Muskegon, the daughter of John and Faye (Poulin) Hughes. She was a graduate of Muskegon Heights High School in 1943. She was one of the greatest examples of the Greatest Generation.
Shirley married Edwin Matthewson, then of Coopersville, in 1947. They had four children, Charles (Edie) Matthewson and Mary Frances Matthewson, both of Tucson, Arizona, Deborah Faye (William) Shaw, of Traverse City, and James Edwin Matthewson who preceded her in death in 1979.
Shirley was an active member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Grand Haven, North Ottawa Community Hospital Guild, Spring Lake Golf and Country Club, the board of the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant, and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 132, Grand Haven and Spring Lake.
After moving to Traverse City in 1980, Shirley met and married L. "Max" Crandall in 1981, he being a life-long resident of Traverse City and founder of Max's Service. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Traverse City Golf and Country Club, and Trillium Garden Club. She was also a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona, where she spent her winters in recent years.
One of Shirley's greatest attributes was her empathy for others. She was a very faithful and intentional friend, reaching out to "neighbors" throughout her life. Even into her final weeks in the Villa Hermosa (Tucson) dining room or with friends down her hallway, she would always extend encouragement and good will.
Shirley leaves behind her three surviving children; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, John B. (Chris) Hughes Jr., of Muskegon; two stepsons, M. "Mick" Crandall, of Traverse City, and Richard (Sharon) Crandall, of Bay Harbor; and a stepdaughter, Kris (James) Owens, of Traverse City; six step-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 132, 344 Fulton St., Grand Haven, MI 49417. A private family service will be held in Tucson, and a public graveside service will be held during the summer in Spring Lake.
