Stanley's Story

Text size

Stanley Joseph "Poncho" Kirt Jr., age 65, of Traverse City, passed away on May 30, 2017 with his close friends and family by his side. He was born in Traverse City to Stanley and Lucille (Belanger) Kirt. Stanley graduated from high school in his home town.
He married his high school sweetheart, Penny Marie Hall, on April 22, 1972 at St. Francis Catholic Church.
He worked at Cone Drive Gear and then retired from D.T.E. Energy in 2006.
Stan cherished his friends and family. He loved spending time in his back yard, swimming in the pool, playing horseshoes, croquet, frisbee, volleyball, and having bonfires with fireworks. If there were family and friends involved Stan was involved. He made people laugh and told stories that were funny but people never knew if they were real or not. He kept them guessing and coming back for more.
Stan had an innate ability to make something old into new. He could see the possibility of anything broken and find the parts to fix it. He had a love for oldies music, especially Elvis. Stan enjoyed using his building skills and helping friends with housing projects, remodeling rental units he owned, and drawing with his grandchildren. His four grandchildren made him proud and he took great pride in time spent with them, playing on the floor, tractor rides, yerf dog rides, teaching them how to drive and valuable life lessons. He was always at their concerts, Boy Scouts, programs, and supporting them.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Penny (Hall) Kirt; children, Tara (Eric) Steimel and Tracy Kirt; grandchildren, John, Rachel, Luke and Tia; siblings, Tom Kirt, Greg (Mary) Kirt, JoAnne Affholter and Joan Reisig; mother-in-law, Dollena (Donald) Burd; brothers-in-law, Benny (Billie) Hall and Michael (Connie) Hall.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gerene Kuhn, Norma Sukis, Roy Kirt, Gary Kirt, Lee Kirt, Leslie Kirt, Duane Kirt and Lisa Sanborn.
A celebration of Stan's life will take place at St. Francis Church, 1015 S. Union St., Traverse City, MI. on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.
