Vernon's Story

Vernon D. Elzinga, 78, of Hudsonville, formerly of Traverse City, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Vern was the son of Richard and Ruth (Wabeke) Elzinga. He married Bonnie Van Slooten on September 6, 1957. They lived in the Traverse City area from 1960 to 2012 and ran a business together from 1975 to 1988. Vern also worked as a Financial Consultant from 1970 until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed playing golf in Traverse City in the summer and in Lakeland, Florida during the winter. Vern was also a longtime fan of the Detroit Tigers and took in several spring training games each year at Joker Marchant Stadium. He also enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting in the Upper Peninsula with his Lost Dutchmen hunting partners. Vern was a lifelong member of the Reformed Church in America in South Blendon, Traverse City and Hudsonville, serving as Deacon and Elder and teaching Sunday school for many years. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Tim and Sarah Elzinga of Grandville and Steve and Heidi Elzinga of Eagle, CO; grandchildren, Jane, Anne, Ethan and Travis Elzinga; sisters, Chris (Chuck) Dyksterhouse of Muskegon and Jan (Ross) Peuler of Hudsonville; sisters-in-law, Polly Stroven and Wanda Van Liew; aunts, Dorothy Machiele and Carolyn (Earl) Shoemaker; uncle, Roger (Julia) Wabeke; and several nieces and nephews. Vern was preceded in death by an infant son, Dan Richard and his brother, Dean R. Elzinga; brother-in-law Douglas Van Slooten; and sisters-in-law June Wyngarden and Mary DeVree. In accordance with the familys wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Vern will be held on Friday, July 28, at 11:00 A.M. at Fellowship Reformed Church, 6610 36th Ave. Hudsonville, MI 49426. Private interment will be at Georgetown Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at Fellowship Reformed Church on Thursday, July 27, from 6 to 8 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Reformed Church. The family wishes to thank American House, Faith Hospice, Zeeland Hospital, ministers and members of Fellowship Reformed Church, supportive neighbors and relatives for their wonderful care.
