William Mackay Taylor "Mac", 89, of Traverse City, died Sunday, June 11, 2017 at French Manor Senior Living with his immediate family by his side. He was born on Sept. 23, 1927, in Greeley, Colorado, to Wendell and Georgina (MacKay) Taylor and was reared in Detroit.
Mac graduated with a bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster and a Master of Divinity degree from McCormick Seminary. He also received a Master of Social Work degree from Wayne State University. Further education included a Doctorate of Ministry degree.
Mac married Ruth Homrighausen on Aug. 28, 1952. He founded Northminster Presbyterian Church in Troy and was pastor there for 38 years. They retired to Traverse City in 1994.
He was an avid reader and was a strong supporter of building the new Traverse City public library. He was active in the church movie and stock clubs. Mac's love of jazz led him to become a volunteer DJ at WNMC, where he hosted his own morning jazz show.
He is survived by his son, Grant; and daughters, Anna and Lee. Also surviving is his sister, Janet Dybdal, who lives in Montana.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 15, at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City.
