Grand Rapids, Michigan - Hansen, OP, Sister Barbara, of Grand Rapids, was gently called home to God on July 19, 2026, at the age of 87, after 69 years of joyful and faithful Dominican religious life.

Sr. Barbara was born October 19, 1938, in Hannah, Michigan, to Eugene and Romana (Weber) Hansen. She was raised in a family whose values of hard work, responsibility, and faith shaped her life and vocation.

After entering the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids, Sister Barbara pursued studies in science, earning a Master of Combined Science degree from the University of Mississippi and a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma. She taught in Catholic schools before joining the faculty of Aquinas College in 1970, where she served as professor of chemistry, Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences, and Academic Vice President.

Sr. Barbara's ministry extended beyond education to pastoral service and congregational leadership. As Vicaress/Councilor for Finance, and later Prioress, she advanced community living, social responsibility, and outreach to those in need. She also pioneered media ministry through the Community Media Center, producing programs that brought faith, justice, and hope to the wider community.

A quiet, gifted poet, Sr. Barbara reflected deeply on spirituality, loss, and transformation, finding beauty and meaning in life's challenges. Her writings revealed the same wisdom, faith, and contemplative spirit that marked her ministry. Remembered for her intelligence, integrity, courage, and compassion, she leaves a lasting legacy of faith-filled leadership, creative expression, and loving service to God and others.

Sr. Barbara will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with a Remembering Service on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 9 am and Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sr. Barbara's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
