Carol Mae Smith Obituary

Williamsburg, MI - Carol Mae (Strand) Smith, 89, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Williamsburg, Michigan. Born on January 21, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, Carol lived a life filled with love, dedication, and an enduring commitment to her family and faith.

Carol earned her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Michigan in 1983, a testament to her determination and intellect. Her professional journey included roles as a telephone operator and gift wrapper in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She also worked at her father's company, C.A. Strand Co., in Detroit before becoming the co-owner of Hughes Electronics Products Corp in Livonia, Michigan. After retiring, Carol volunteered for many years at the Elk Rapids Chamber of Commerce in Elk Rapids, Michigan. Through these endeavors, Carol demonstrated a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence.

Family was at the heart of Carol's life. She was the beloved wife of Rich for 68 years—a partnership built on love and devotion. Together, they raised four children: Richard Jr. (Vicki) Smith, Kurt Smith, Amandasue Butterfield, and Suzanne (Joseph) Moscynski. Carol cherished her role as a grandmother to Alicia, Jonathan, Jeramy, Jelana, Brianna, and Courtney; and as a great-grandmother to Braelyn, Izaiah, Onyka, Zoey, Mira, Kynzlie, Sophie, Liviana, Tristan, Korbyn, Wesson, Ayla, and Josie. She also held a special place in her heart for her sister-in-law, Joan Smith, and her goddaughter Pam (Rob) Thomas.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Charles Strand Jr. and Helen (Hilty) Strand; her sister Gail Olack; and her brother Charles Strand. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and leaves behind countless extended family members who will forever treasure their memories of her.

A woman of deep faith and compassion, Carol was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her spirituality guided her throughout her life and inspired those around her.

One of Carol's greatest passions was researching her family history—a labor of love she pursued for decades. She meticulously gathered not only names and dates but also the stories that brought her ancestors to life. This dedication ensured that future generations would have a rich understanding of their heritage.

Carol will be remembered for her humor, compassion, and boundless love. She touched the lives of all who knew her as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, godmother, and friend. Her legacy is one of kindness and connection—a reminder to cherish the bonds we share with one another.

May Carol's memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing.

A memorial service will be held in Carol's honor on May 9th at 11:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1128 N Cedar St, Kalkaska.
