Dave had a childhood full of fond memories from growing up in northern Michigan. He relished and always looked forward to his Traverse City High School Class of '60 reunions, which lasted for days. When he & Fran made the decision to sell their family home in 2007, he would remark that it was one of the hardest things that they ever had to do.
Dave graduated from Western Michigan University with a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering ('70) and a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering ('66), and was one semester shy of a Master's Degree in Industrial Psychology.
After college he started his career at National Water Lift in Kalamazoo, MI. This is also where he met the love of his life, Molly, and decided to start a family. When Dave married Molly, he also married into a large family, a very large family All of the Smith family will miss his huge heart, vast knowledge and sense of humor.
Dave had an extensive and varied work history - from his early career designing space, aircraft and ordinance components (National Water Lift and Brooks & Perkins), to industrial refrigeration (Kysor/Isowall), to manufacturing croquet sets and outdoor furniture (South Bend Toy and Jack Post Corp) and designing custom automation machinery (Capitol Technologies).
In 1976 he moved the family to South Bend, IN for his next and final stops in his career with South Bend Toy Co., then a div of Milton Bradley and then after with Capitol Technology (Sr Sales Engr & Chief Engr). He was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers and was a past President of the St. Joseph Valley Chapter.
His hobbies centered around his life's passions, cars & sports. He enjoyed tinkering on projects in his work shop and the long list of various car and truck restoration projects with the boys over the years. He treasured attending the Spring Carlisle & Fall Hershey, PA swap meets with his crew.
The list of work colleagues, associates and friends are too numerous to list, but he treasured them all and considered everyone a dear friend. He could always be counted on for being one of the most ardent fans of ND Football & Purdue Basketball and his love and admiration of all things Cadillac. So much so, he even secured a job early in his career and moved the family to Cadillac, MI.
While his knowledge and presence were large, it will be his immense & caring heart that will be remembered the most.
