In 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Jim, a Naval officer and pilot. Jim and Doris were stationed at many Naval bases, having three children born in three different states. In 1969 they moved the family to Traverse City, where they raised three children.
Doris loved her work as a psychiatric nurse for the State Hospital and later at Birchwood Medical.
After Jim's death in 1999, Doris spent her winters in Beardstown, Illinois, close to her sisters and many nieces and nephews. She spent her summers at the cottage on Lake Leelanau, a beloved place where she welcomed and entertained family and friends to visit all summer long.
Doris loved fishing with Jim and being at the lake. She had a keen eye for decorating, loved to shop for antiques and was an avid tennis fan and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Per Doris' wishes, a private service will be held. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at the family cottage, 8330 S. Lakeview Road, Traverse City, from 1 to 4 p.m.
