Douglas David Hume, age 78, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Evelyn (Garceau) Hume.

Douglas graduated from Traverse City High School on June 4, 1957 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in Colorado.

He graduated from Ferris State College with an associate's degree and joined the Traverse City Police Department, where he served for two years.

On June 12, 1964 Douglas was sworn in as a Grand Rapids Police Officer and was Grand Rapids' first undercover officer. He served in the vice unit from 1968 to 1976 and retired in 1986 after 22 years on the force.

His many hobbies included woodworking, model railroads, rockets and the restoration of older vehicles, for which he won numerous trophies at area car shows.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jennifer (Franklin) Hume; his sons, Steven (Pamela), Bradley (Debra), David and Craig (Amy); stepson, Christopher (Tracey) Franklin; granddaughters, Alexandria, Amanda, Carley, Caitlyn, Megan and Madelyn; step grandsons, Javier Angeles and Alexander Franklin; sister, Nancy (James) Merlihan; brother, Bruce; and cousins, in-laws and many friends.

A time of remembrance and sharing will be held Friday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE. Friends and relatives may greet the family on Thursday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or the Kent County Humane Society.
