Douglas Gerald Lutz
Douglas "Doug" Gerald Lutz, 78, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly at his daughter's residence in Franklin, Indiana on Jan. 12, 2020.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1941 in Traverse City, to Gerald and Delcia (Davis) Lutz.
Doug married Mary Hall on May 25, 1968; she lovingly survives.
He is also survived by his son, Mark (Susan) Lutz; daughter, Louise Warriner; daughter, Elizabeth Lutz; grandchildren, Douglas, Kimberlee, Victoria and Max; and sister, Doreen Underwood.
He was preceded in passing by his parents.
Doug was a 1959 graduate of Traverse City Central High School and attended college for two years.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Doug was employed by the Traverse City Post Office, retiring after 35 years of dedicated service.
Doug was an avid reader of spy novels and books on American history. He always encouraged young people to read, especially his grandchildren. When asked why he was so good at trivia questions, he would say, "That's because I am a lifelong reader."
He enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, traveling and watching sports, especially baseball. He loved pizza, burgers and his wife's chocolate pie. He was very content with life and was a wonderful family man.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bingham Township Hall at 7171 S. Center Highway, Traverse City, MI 49684.

Dear Beth.
I was saddened to hear of your father’s passing.
The loss of a loved one is never easy, but the loss of a parent, someone you think will always be there for you, is especially painful.
Be assured that you and your family are in our thoughts and our prayers.
May you find hope and consolation in the words of St. Paul; ‘are you not aware that those who have died with Christ in the waters of baptism, will also rise with him in the glory of the resurrection.’ May your Dad now share with Christ in his eternal glory.

Doug was one of two (Mary) people who my Mom and Dad (Art & Judy) had a great relationship with. They were 1st cousins on my Dads side. They were not just relatives though, but very good friends with each other. Doug and Mary were always there for them through all the hard times that we have in life. Every year since way, way back the four of them would take a annual trip somewhere. I know that my folks will miss this very much, but will also have so many great memories of the places they seen and the experiences they enjoyed together. Mary, Mark, Louise, and Elizabeth, I am so sorry for your loss and wish to Thank you, for sharing you Husband/Dad with my parents.

Doug was my cousin and we shared the same birthday, February 9th. For about 50 years of our lives, we would get together to celebrate our birthdays – from the time where we hand cranked the ice cream maker on the farm to going to a restaurant in later years. More recently, when I became a snowbird, we always made the point of me calling him or he calling me on February 9th.
For many years, we celebrated Christmas Eve together. Getting together with Uncle Doc, Aunt Delcie, Doreen and Doug were always special.
I will always cherish those memories – and this year on February 9th, I will have a lump in my throat.

Mary, I'm very sorry to hear about the loss. Hard to believe I've known Doug for probably 50 years. When I would use your basketball hoop in the driveway he would most likely come outside and shoot hoops with us kids. He was always kind to us kids growing up and always had time to chat with me. I'm certainly going to miss him.
