Eric P. Hamp Eric P. Hamp, of Beulah, son of William Pratt and Edith (McConkey) Hamp, died peacefully on Feb. 17, 2019 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions with his daughter and family by his side.
He was an American linguist widely respected as a leading authority on Indo-European linguistics.
He was the Robert Maynard Hutchins Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, departments of linguistics, Slavic languages and literatures, psychology (cognition and communication) and the committee on the Ancient Mediterranean World.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margot; two children, Julijana (Butch) Love and Alex Hamp; as well as grandchildren, Gwen Hamp, Harold Love III, Maia Hamp, Richard Love, Evan Hamp, Alek Hamp and Hope Lane.
