G. Thomas Morgan (Tom) Obituary
Fishkill, NY - G. Thomas (Tom) Morgan, age 86, passed away February 18, 2026 in Fishkill, NY. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane (McCool) Morgan, two children Mike (Inga) Morgan and Susie (Michael) Bagnato, four granddaughters Katie, Kira, Emma and Mia, and two great grandchildren Justin and Lyla. He was affectionately called Papa by all who loved him.
Tom was born in Traverse City December 27, 1939, son of Gary and Helen Morgan, lifelong residents of Traverse City and business owners of The John C. Morgan Company, The Morgan Cannery and eventually Morgan-McCool, Inc. Tom worked in the canneries throughout his childhood. From a young age he had a love of the water. As a young teen, he purchased a lawnmower and mowed lawns to save up enough to buy his first boat. That passion for boating remained with him throughout his life.
Upon completion of high school, Tom attended Albion College and then joined the United States Coast Guard where he had a highly decorated 36 year career as an aviation officer. He received many accolades including the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic efforts in the rescue of all passengers from the sinking vessel Prinsendam off the Coast of Alaska. After retiring in 1994, Tom and Mary Jane continued to travel the world and sail. Tom captained their boats Gabbiano and then Wings for the next 16 years before settling down in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. In early 2025, Tom and Mary Jane moved to New York to live with their daughter and family, both enjoying fond memories of time spent sailing the Hudson River.
A celebration of life will take place in Traverse City in the fall. Details will be announced at a later date.
