Traverse City, Michigan - Gretchen Elaine Campbell, age 72, of Traverse City Michigan passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Friday, July 31, 2026 after a tenacious battle with esophageal cancer.

Gretchen was born on March 18, 1954 in East Grand Rapids, Michigan to a teacher and a principal, John and Irmgard Hart. She was the first-born of four children. Her childhood was marked with lots of joy, spending summers with her siblings on her grandmother's farm tending to her cow Ruby and the many horses and chickens.

While earning her degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University, Gretchen developed a passion for adventure that continued after graduation. She worked in retail to fund her travels, making unforgettable memories in Hong Kong with her friend Shelley and visiting her brother in the Middle East. There, she rode Arabian horses around the pyramids and SCUBA dived in the Red Sea. Rumor exists that she played a role in a small smuggling ring, bringing American goods to her relatives on the east side of the Berlin Wall.

Gretchen was introduced to the love of her life Mark Campbell on a blind date. They married on April 12, 1986 and they moved up to Traverse City where she started her teaching career.

Gretchen dedicated her life to serving others. After spending her early summers volunteering at Camp Blodgett on Lake Michigan, she continued that servitude commitment throughout her life by delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering with adults with special needs at the Adult Care Center, and puppeteering with Kids on the Block puppet troupe.

Of course, Gretchen also knew how to enjoy life. In retirement, she and her husband bought a second home in Miami Beach, where she took on the official (paid) role of "secret beach shopper" ensuring every South Beach chair and umbrella was perfectly positioned for the ultimate day in the sun. She met new friends that she held dear to her heart and enjoyed the Miami night-life and food-scene.

Gretchen's greatest joy was raising her two daughters, Kelsey and Kim. She was devoted to giving them the best childhood, showering them with love while encouraging them to become well-rounded individuals. From season to season, she kept them involved in sports and activities, driving countless miles across Michigan to ensure they had every opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. She never missed an important game, concert, or milestone, always there as their biggest cheerleader, chauffeur, snack supplier, and unwavering supporter. Kelsey and Kim don't know how they got so lucky to have such a loving and dedicated mother.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents Irmgard and John Hart. She leaves behind her husband of 40 years Mark "Angus" Campbell, her daughters Kelsey (Josh) Foster and Kimberly Campbell. She was looking forward to celebrating Kim's upcoming marriage to Michael Louvaris. She was absolutely enamored by her new granddaughter Campbell Mara Foster. She loved spending her last earthly weeks getting to know her first of hopefully many grandchildren and creating lasting memories with her children's husband and future husband. She also leaves behind her sisters Kris (Dan) Broome, Lisa (Dan) Vos, and Eric Hart, her nieces and nephews Danny, Jeff, Heidi, Kelly, JP, Meredith, Grace, Mike, Greg, Ross and Lisa. She was blessed with the greatest friends who will miss her. And we cannot forget her grandoggy Beans who was completely obsessed with Gretchen.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of the Cowell Family Cancer center and the surgical team at Beth Israel in Boston, MA where she received extraordinary care. Gretchen will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

A Memorial Service honoring Gretchen will take place at 11 am, with visitation starting at 10 am, on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Mission Hill Church, 6105 Center Rd., Traverse City, Michigan 49686. A reception will follow in the Fireside Room.
