West Bloomfield, MI - James Charles "Chuck" Downey passed away on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous fight.

Born in Pocatello, Idaho to James and Merel Downey, Chuck lived a life defined by service, engineering excellence, and deep devotion to family and community. He earned his BS in Engineering from Purdue University and his MS from the University of Florida. Chuck spent much of his career as an Engineering Manager at General Motors and later served as Vice President at HE Services.

Chuck married Melinda (Donovan) Downey 53 years ago, and together they built a life rooted in family and community, first in Frankenmuth and later in Traverse City, Michigan. He was active in the Bavarian Festival (serving as President), the Frankenmuth Lions Club, and co-owned Nature's Designs floral shop.

In Traverse City, Chuck remained deeply engaged in community service, including Rotary Club, Michigan Blood (now Versiti), and the Traverse City Cherry Festival. He also served on multiple boards and continued his lifelong commitment to community.

An avid outdoorsman, Chuck loved skiing, fishing, hiking, and exploring Northern Michigan. He helped establish National Ski Patrol programs at Boyne Highlands and shared his love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. He was known for his humor, storytelling, and unwavering presence at family events and activities.

Chuck is survived by his wife Melinda; children Krista Downey Siddall and Gregory (Karyn) Downey; and six grandchildren: Autumn Siddall, Logan (Sophia) Bursick-Harrington, Abigail Siddall, Haylee Downey, Sabrina Downey, and Jayden Downey.

A private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Henry Ford Health Cancer Center.
