Traverse City, Michigan - Jody Vaughn Byland, 78, passed away peacefully with family present on April 26, 2026.
Born on April 6, 1948, Jody devoted his life to education and his family. A compassionate elementary principal at Fremont Public Schools for 37 years, he shared his love of learning with countless students. Upon leaving school administration, Jody worked as a MI State Pupil Accountant for Newaygo County, MI.
Jody graduated from Hope College in 1970, married his wife of 55 years, and moved to Fremont, MI. They later lived in Traverse City, MI where they enjoyed the beauty of the area and being close to family. Jody loved to camp and kayak with family and friends.
Jody was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his wife Peggy Remtema Byland, and their children Mark (Jennifer) Byland, Ellen (Joe) Zupancic, and Ann (Ryan) Knudsen. He was immensely proud of his four granddaughters Megan, Laura, Ella, Mariah and four grandsons Caleb, Ryan, Luke, and Christopher who brought him endless joy.
Jody is also survived by his siblings: Jeffrey (Elaine) Byland, and James (Mary) Byland. He was preceded in death by his parents Theodore Byland and Bernice (Bielema) Byland.
Jody will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and the gentle strength he brought to everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family invites those who wish to honor Jody to a memorial open house June 20, 2026 under the tent at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, MI from 3-6:30. There will be a time of sharing at 4:30.
