John Scott Munro (Scott)
John Scott Munro (Scott) Obituary
Williamsburg, Michigan - John Scott Munro (Scott) died peacefully on July 8th, 2025 at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan at the age of 83. Thankfully, his stay at the hospital was a brief few hours, having been able to remain living with his wife Sandy at their home in Williamsburg until the day of his death, despite his struggle with Parkinson's Disease.
Scott was the eldest child of Rosella Mae Morrison and Lowell Eugene Munro. He lived nearly his whole life in Northern Michigan on the Munro family farm aside from his time in East Lansing at Michigan State University while earning his teaching degree and a year at school in Hawaii. He was a public school teacher for 40+ years at Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids. Though he was qualified to teach at any grade level, he truly enjoyed his 7th and 8th grade students and chose to teach at that level his whole career. He also enjoyed his coaching posts including basketball, track, cross country, and Science Olympiad. He was known to be welcoming to his students, opening his room at lunch hour for chess club and socializing. He enjoyed challenging his students and fellow teachers to a game of ping pong during his lunch hour. Being a farmer was a lifelong second career for Scott, and the cherry trees were the main business every summer. He was very resourceful and skilled at modification and repairs of farm equipment, including making many improvements to the same cherry shaker for 45 years thanks to his talent with a cutting torch and welder (as well as a good amount of duct tape!) Scott also loved to hunt, fish, watch MSU basketball and football, as well as cheer for the Lions. He was an avid reader, enjoyed cribbage and chess, and also loved time in nature taking note of wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
Scott was known as a hard-working man who had a strong Christian faith, a playful sense of humor and an infectious laugh who loved his friends, family, wife and kids. When grandkids came along, they were the joy of his life. He embraced being "Grandpa Scott" wholeheartedly. Scott is survived by his wife Sandra Munro, daughter Kirstin (Hans) Stiebel-Schoonover, son Gabriel Munro, sisters Jean (Larry) Rohrschneider and Phyllis (Michael) Wells, grandchildren Liam Munro, Sean Munro, Emma Munro, Aidan Stiebel, Lucy Stiebel and step-grandchildren Bjorn, Lucas and Elijah Schoonover as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Lowell Munro and Rosella Morrison, and brother-in-law Larry Rohrschneider .
A memorial gathering will be held on August 17th from 1-4 p.m. at the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those wishing to make a donation to consider any foundation or organization supporting Parkinson's Disease research.
The family wish to thank Scott's wife Sandy for her unrelenting devotion to caring for Scott at home throughout the years of his illness; he will be sorely missed. His passing leaves his wife and family brokenhearted. They will always miss him, but draw comfort from the blessing of all the wonderful memories of Scott and the love he shared.
