Judy Ramsdell, M.D.
Judith Lynn Ramsdell, M.D., 73, of Traverse City, passed away on Oct. 1, 2019 surrounded by her children and friends. She was born on July 3, 1946, to Margaret Sullivan and Ralph Johnson in Grosse Pointe. After graduating from Dominican High School in 1964, she went on to study at the University of Michigan, where she graduated in 1968. She then received her Medical Degree from Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania (now known as Drexel University College of Medicine) in Philadelphia in 1972.
After medical school, Judy completed her residency and fellowship in Oncology at Grace Harper Hospital in Detroit. In 1977 she moved to Traverse City as medical oncologist at Thirlby Clinic and Munson Medical Center, but later began her own practice where she loved being an oncologist until her retirement in 2013.
Judy was instrumental in starting hospice care, donating her office space for the first HIV/AIDS resource center, and advocating for democratic/political issues in Traverse City. She was a one-of-a-kind, selfless, no-holds barred woman who made sure the disadvantaged or less fortunate were cared for as well as those with resources.
Judy loved to watch tennis and TV mystery shows, go out to dinner with friends, read and swap mystery books. She loved and pampered her friends and dogs. She was always feeding other's souls with love, compassion, medical knowledge, and food. Judy truly was larger than life and loved to cheer all on with a bellowing "woo woo."
Judy was predeceased by her father, Ralph; mother, Margaret; and stepfather, Carl Boldt.
She is survived by her son, Sean; daughter, Kerrie; and her best friend and companion, Maureen "Reenie" Riley.
Services will be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. with a visitation at 10a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to the Cherryland Humane Society, SPCA or Munson Hospice House.

x I am sorry that Judy has passed. I didn't know it until today. She was a Great woman and doctor. She always told me I won't see my patients suffer. If you needed anything she was always there. I was talking to my daughter about her today before I knew she passed. She was a great doctor and friend. She is going to be missed. RIP my friend :(

I am so sorry that I didn't make it over to see her, I truly believe that I would not be here without her! Only problem with her ,she cared &worried; about her patient families to much and not enough about herself!!!she sure loved you kids, talked about you a lot! God bless & Keep you all! Loved her!!

Meeting Judy was my privilege, years ago, when I started in the Emergency Department. She treated me with respect and deference, dismissing the fact that I was a medical neophyte, typifying her respect for all staff and patients. Truly an Oncology pioneer and visionary, Judy led her patients and colleagues into a future, always filled with optimism, truth and hope. Rest peacefully Judy.

Judy truly was "ONE OF A KIND"! A heart of gold and a soul that radiated. Her knowledge and willingness to back you up was a true asset to our community for so many years and I being one that was blessed. My heart is heavy, as I know that her presence will be missed greatly by so many that loved her dearly. My condolences to you all. I will cherish the pieces that I purchased from her several years ago and will light a candle at our holiday meal in her honor.

My thoughts and prayers are with the children of Judy. I remember one time specifically when my father was a patient at Munson. He was having some issues and Judy was the first person in the room to help him. My father wasn't even her patient but she beat the nurses in to help dad. Judy was a wonderful person and will be missed by all. Peace be with you.
