Ken Somers
Ken passed away from his battle with cancer with his wife, Lynn, at his side on Nov. 7, 2019. Ken is now with the Lord.
Ken was born in Muskegon on March 6, 1943 as the oldest of three boys to Marian (Elmquest) and Carrol Somers. When he was 14 the family moved to Traverse City, where he played basketball and football at Traverse City Central, graduating in 1961.
Ken was extremely proud of his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served three years from 1966 to 1969. He was stationed in Vietnam for most of this time. Semper Fi!
Upon returning, he studied business administration at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
Ken began a long career as an insurance professional, first at Michigan Mutual Insurance in Traverse City. In the late 1970s he moved to the Grand Rapids area, where he continued in the insurance business working with several different agencies until he started his own agency, where he finished out his career.
Ken was an avid tennis player, both as player and spectator starting in Traverse City at Logan Racquet Club and then after moving to Grand Rapids at the Ramblewood Racquet Club.
A longtime member of John Knox Presbyterian Church, he met a woman after a service one Valentine's Day. Her name was Lynn Cady. Their courtship started immediately. They dated for 11 years before getting married on May 15, 2004. Those years were full of love, happiness and lots of laughter.
Ken enjoyed being involved in the Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce, BDO Toastmasters and being an independent rep for Isagenix.
We wish to thank the great VA medical teams here in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, the staff at Metro Health and the caring people on the Grandville Fire and Rescue.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn; brother, Steve (Pat); sister-in-law, Toni Slater (Mike); niece, Amy Bollmann-Hahn; and cousins, Kirsten Bowie, Marilyn Franz (Ron), Charlotte Olson (Garry) and Cheri (Pete) Turkus.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Marian and Carrol Somers; and his brother, Paul Somers.
For friends in the local Grand Rapids area, we will celebrate Ken's life with a tribute service on Nov. 21, 2019 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home (west building), located at 4235 Prairie St., SW, Grandville. A service will be planned for late spring in Traverse City at a time to be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider a gift to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville FL, 32256; www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

One of my classmates at TCHS. There was no one who did not like Ken! A friend to everyone.

Dear Lynn,
What a shock when I opened the Sunday paper today to see that Ken had passed a week ago. He went through a lot of medical issues in the past couple of years, but it is still a shock at his young age, at least I feel 76 is young. If there is anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to call or email. My sincerest sympathy to you at this time. Lyn
