Larry E. Glass

Larry Edward Glass, 84, of Leland, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2019 at Medilodge of Leelanau while surrounded by his loving family.
Larry was born Feb. 18, 1935 in Alpha, Ohio, the son of Lauris and Mary Hilda (Bailey) Glass. On Sept. 14, 1956 in Beaver Creek, Ohio, he married Elizabeth "Dee" (Rasnic) Glass, who survives.
Larry attended Beavercreek High School, where he excelled in athletics. His pitching led Beavercreek to a state baseball championship in 1952. He received a baseball scholarship to attend Miami of Ohio University, where he was a two-sport athlete, playing both baseball and basketball. He signed a professional baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians and used his signing bonus to marry Elizabeth. A serious elbow injury ended his professional baseball career but pushed him into coaching college basketball. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in education and was invited to join his former Miami coach, Bill Rohr, on the basketball coaching staff at Northwestern University. He went on to become the youngest Big Ten basketball head coach at the age of 28. He retired from college basketball in 1969.
He and Elizabeth moved his family north to Leland in 1970, purchasing the Glass House Motel, what is now the Whaleback Inn. He taught middle school English and physical education at Leland Public School. When Title IX became law, his wife persuaded him to coach his daughters in basketball. Thus, beginning a high school coaching career starting in 1978 and ending for good in 2006. He was inducted into the Michigan Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, won many Coach of the Year Awards and 3 state championships during his tenure at Leland.
Larry was many things to many people over the years. He was a teacher, coach, father, husband, mentor, friend and colleague, but most importantly to those who love him very much ... Papa.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; four children, Merri Lynn (Paul Peschel) Bouckaert, Laurie (Chris Stone) Glass, Rebecca McKee (Richard Stearns) and Michael (Kelly) Glass; his grandchildren, Ashley (Joel) Heyboer, Emily (Tony) Matthys, Alisha (Josh) Childress, Elizabeth (James) Stibich, Caitlin McKee, Mickayla Glass, Matt and Sarah Peschel; his great-grandchildren, Lily, Kyle, Beau, Linden, Maya, Mina and Harwell; his sister, Lynn Ellen Stauffer; his nephews, Ty (Jennifer) Stauffer and Chip (Dana) Staffer; his sisters-in-law, Darlene (Russ) Leblanc and Dinah (David) King; and brother-in-law, Grover (Judy) Rasnic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Charles Stauffer; and son-in-law, Kirk Emiel Bouckaert.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Medilodge of Leelanau for the amazing and often heroic care of Larry in his last months.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Leland Community United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be directed to the Glass Family Scholarship with checks payable to Leland Public School, PO Box 498, Leland, MI 49654.

So very sorry for your families loss. Coach Glass was one of the finest persons I have ever met. He had a great sense of humor, and always loved when he and Miss Dee came to Ohio.

I was so sad when I learned Coach Glass had passed away. I, first, want to express my sincere condolences to the entire family. And I also would like you to know how much he meant to me. I, like many other students and basketball players who were taught or coached by him, are better today because of that experience. I still remember all my prepositions from junior high English, his favorite quotes(such as practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect; "horsefeathers", and probably can quote his entire lesson on how to shoot a basketball starting with "if you were going to build a machine...") and many of the plays we ran on the basketball court 35 years ago. I am so tha...nkful that he encouraged me to pick up "that big orange ball" and that I had the opportunity to play for him. He was probably the most influential non-family member in my life. I wish that I could be there to express my condolences to you all in person, but please know you have my deepest sympathy and all are in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed but his memory lives on.Read more

It was obvious to me the first time I met Larry that he was a special man. Fourteen years separated us in age as first year teachers in Leland in 1971. Larry was a role model to me as a teacher, coach , and leader. Always supportive, he provided wit and wisdom to me on many occasions. His logic about so many things helped countless students and friends through many difficult times. A great teacher, mentor, and friend. Dee, MaryLynn. Laurie, Rebecca, Michael, and family, you have my deepest condolences.

Dee and the Glass Family

Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Larry was a great coach and a friendly rival. We met 3 times in the semis in the 80’s. He always got the best out of his team.

Coach Glass was a great competitor and a great coach. He alone set the standard for girl's basketball in the State of Michigan. I was proud to have coached against Coach Glass. I learned much from watching his Lady Comets that I was able to incorporate into my coaching. His memory will last as long as young ladies continue to excel on the basketball courts of Northern Michigan. Farewell Coach.

Whether it be friends, family, or fellow educators/coaches, your message was always the same. Don't strive for perfection, but rather strive to be the best you can be.
