Traverse City, Mi - Matthew Donald Shoemaker, 58, passed away peacefully at home on May 6, 2026, surrounded by love, family, and good music after a courageous battle with cancer.

Matthew was born on June 5, 1967. He lived life fully and unapologetically, with a deep love for music, movies, hockey and MMA. Whether he was listening to Led Zeppelin — his favorite band — watching the Red Wings, or spending time with the people he loved most, Matthew brought passion, humor, and authenticity everywhere he went.

Above all else, he loved his family. His grandchildren were the center of his world and brought him endless pride and happiness. He cherished every moment spent with them.

Matthew is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Shoemaker; his daughter Samantha Stinson (Jakob) and their children Lewis, Edgar, and Annabelle; his daughter Amanda Smith (Eric) and their children Fletcher, Sawyer, and Walker; his nephew Kyle Bridges (Brooke) and sister-in-law Cheryl Brewer; and his brothers David Shoemaker (Joy), Mark Shoemaker (Pam), Kirk Shoemaker (Donna), and Timothy Shoemaker (Lori).

Matthew will be remembered for his strength, his individuality, his love of music, and the deep devotion he had for his family. His presence was larger than life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Matthew's life will be announced by the family at a later date.
