Muriel Joan Avery Obituary

Traverse City, MI - Muriel Joan Avery, 93, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

Muriel was born on August 7, 1932, in Kingsley, Michigan, to the late Ivan and Bessie (Voice) Wilson. On October 26, 1951, she married the late Nahum Edward Avery, also in Kingsley. Together they lovingly raised four wonderful children: Pamela, Rhonda, Chuck, and Dan.

Muriel was the kindest and sweetest person in the world. A lifelong resident of the area, she was the oldest of ten children and a devoted caretaker throughout her life. Most recently, she lovingly cared for her grandson several days each week.

Muriel adored her many dogs over the years and enjoyed taking them for walks. She loved her family deeply and was happiest when hosting gatherings at her home on Spider Lake, where she lived for over 70 wonderful years. Whether it was birthdays, holidays, or graduations, Muriel welcomed everyone with open arms. She was the best hostess, always making sure every guest was served before she ever took a bite herself.

In her spare time, Muriel enjoyed quilting, gardening, and canning. She was an avid photographer who cherished documenting family events and sharing her photos with loved ones. She preserved countless generational memories through her photography.

Muriel was an amazing woman who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children Pamela Avery, Rhonda (Ronald) Winn, Chuck Avery, and Dan Avery; grandchildren Michael, Christopher, Aeron, Levi, Jill, Jonathan, and Stephanie; great-grandchildren Jade, Josh, Caleb, and Oscar; and great-great-granddaughter Millie. She is also survived by her sisters Nancy Wilson, Sandra Sledder, Diane Cowley, Gloria (Dennis) Burke, and Jennifer (Wayne) Simmons, sister-in-law Cheryl Wilson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Muriel is also survived by her beloved dog, Izzy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nahum; siblings Duane, Jimmy, Denise, and Jackie; her daughter-in-law, Diane Avery and her dog Dozer.

A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at Noon. Burial will take place beside her beloved husband Nahum at Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Disability Network or the Cherryland Humane Society. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Michigan for their loving support and care over the last few months.
