René Elise Hoxie-Papineau, 62, of Traverse City, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019 with her family by her side.
She was born to the late Grant and Marvel (Gokey) Papineau on Aug. 23, 1957. René grew up with her loving parents and six siblings in Beulah.
She attended Benzie Central Schools before attending Northwestern Michigan College.
She spent summers playing in the waters of Lake Michigan, relishing in family trips to the Upper Peninsula and making lifelong memories with her siblings and close-knit group of childhood friends.
René absolutely adored her son, Grant, and loved him fiercely. She took pride in supporting his love of racing, from cars to snowmobiles.
René loved any gathering that brought together family and friends, hiking the beaches no matter what time of year, collecting seashells from her travels, nurturing the flowers in her garden, baking for all those near and dear to her and exploring God's great country with her boyfriend, Joseph Miller.
Her inquisitive mind, love of organization and passion for helping others brought her to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department, where she served proudly as the evidence control officer since 2002.
René is survived by her son, Grant (Krista) Hoxie; six siblings, Roger (Carole) Papineau, Mary (Philip) Hoyt, Cleone Papineau, Peter (Jane Miller) Papineau, Charles Papineau and John (Martha) Papineau; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her significant other, Joseph Miller; her parents; and her brother-in-law, Philip Hoyt.
The family wishes to thank all of those who loved René and have supported them through this difficult time.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the funeral Mass, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m., at St. Ann Catholic Church in Frankfort. The Rev. Msgr. John Porter will serve as celebrant. Lunch and fellowship will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in René's name to the Grand Traverse Region Public Safety Alliance, 897 Parsons Road, Traverse City, MI 49686-3650.
Arrangements have been provided by Jowett Family Funeral Homes.

I am so very sad to hear of Rene's passing. My prayers and condolences go out to the family. I worked at the Sheriff's Office for many years and knew her well. She was a fine lady, always had a pretty smile and was an awesome baker. She will be missed by all. May God comfort her family.

I don't remember meeting anyone who loved life more than Rene. She handled one health issue then another all in stride when others facing similar situations would fall apart. She was always optimistic and looking forward to the day when she could retire and move "south" to Florida or Arizona for the sunshine and warmth.
Though never asked, Rene never missed the chance to send a Bible verse or deliver a birthday or Christmas card through the years I've known her. This became a tradition between us I will remember...and miss. ('You'll still be receiving your cards, only now they will be delivered to a different address, Rene.')
Rene told me more than once about sitting on her deck behind her h
...ouse, "the one that Dad built" (which was subsequently re-built by Joe and Rene this summer), watching the full moon. She always seemed to appreciate beauty in nature not often commented on by others.
Rene has taught me to appreciate all the people and things in life, and when I get down, I will look up in the sky at the full moon and see her beautiful smile in my mind's eye once again.
Your smiles and giggles and friendship will be missed and never forgotten. May God bless you now that you are in His presence.

Rene was a great friend and confidante. She was always there with her big smile and plenty of baked goods! My daughter remembers Rene baking sweet treats for her all the time. I have not seen Rene since moving to Indianapolis but am heartbroken at this loss.

René was truly a great person. I cherished our friendship. I was grateful to be able to share our faith in God with each other through some difficult times. I am heart broken that she is gone from this earth. I will miss her friendship and our talks.

Rene was very special to my sister Laurie during her last stage of life. We so appreciated her compassion and beautiful smile when we so desperately needed it. May the wonderful memories of Rene carry you through this difficult time.

I met René through my beloved Aunt Laurel Flaska Papineau (Charles’ wife who passed in 2000). I will always cherish the times we spent together. I’m devastated to hear of Rene’s passing. She will be dearly missed.

John, I and our sons remember our loving former sister- in- law. Rene was a great person. So sad by her life cut so short in such a tragic way. We will keep Grant, Krista and entire family in our prayers during this sad time. Gods Blessings to you all.
