Richard Harvey Ayling (Dick) Obituary

Traverse City, MI - Richard Harvey Ayling, age 90, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of family, sportsmanship, and enduring friendship.

For many years, Dick dedicated his life to inspiring students both in and out of the classroom. Teaching was more than a profession to him—it was a calling. After earning his PhD, he devoted his career to education, believing deeply in its power to build character, open doors, and bring people together, and he carried those values throughout his life.

An excellent athlete, Dick maintained a lifelong love of sports, especially golf. Whether on the course or on the sidelines, he found joy in competition and camaraderie. Golf, in particular, remained a passion well into his later years, offering both challenge and fellowship.

Above all, Dick cherished the friendships he built through family, education, and sports. He valued loyalty and integrity, and he remained deeply connected to friends from every chapter of his life. The grin on his face and twinkle in his eye reflected his wry sense of humor and the kindness he felt toward people from all walks of life. His warmth, humor, and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Dick is survived by his wife, Colleen, children Cathy Stepka, Mike Ayling (Vicky), Chris Annese (Tony), eight grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a joyful friend, and a man who lived with purpose and joy.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Acme EMS and Heartland Hospice for their kindness and support that allowed Dick to remain at home until the end.

Honoring his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held in the spring, on a warm deck with a cold beer. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations be made to the Traverse City Junior Golf Association in honor of his lifelong belief that education and sports could be great equalizers.
