Interlochen, MI - In the early morning hours of December 31st, 2025, Richard Anthony Joyce, Sr passed peacefully from this world. Born on September 2nd, 1941 to Vincent and Beulah (Ackerman) Joyce in Clio, MI, Richard was welcomed as the youngest of six boisterous siblings. Doted on by his four older sisters and big brother, Richard was fond of mischief at an early age. As a teen he found a deep love of music, cars and tinkering, so much so he decided to steal his father's car at 14. Thus, beginning a wild rebellious ride for his parents. Wicked dance moves, great with a wrench and decked out in a crisp, white tee with a fresh pack of Pall Malls rolled up in the sleeve, he'd finish off his look with a dollop of Brylcreem to tame his unruly black curls. He was the original "greaser", raising hell and finding trouble at every turn. But all good things must end, and it wasn't long before he decided he'd sewn his wild oats, and it was time to settle down. On July 4, 1964, he married Brenda (Sammons) McVannel, following in his parent's footsteps with his own family of six children. In 1977 Richard & Brenda moved the family to East Jordan, because in his words, it was "God's Country". He loved the beauty of Northern Michigan and felt good knowing his family could grow and thrive in such a beautiful place. He poured himself into fixing cars and rehabbing old bicycles for neighbors, and there is probably more than one person that has a story about him asking you to hold the end of the spark plug if he was working on a lawn mower.
The years treated Richard kindly, his children grew up, and most had children of their own, bestowing the title of Grandpa & Great Grandpa on him no less than 20 times. At 84 years old, it's difficult to sum up one's life in a few short paragraphs, there are countless stories and memories that are simply too vast to recount. Comfort is found in knowing he was surrounded by his children in his final hours, and his stories will live on through them.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent & Beulah Joyce, his brother Vincent Joyce Jr., sisters Clarice Dougherty & Patricia Smith, and his son Richard Anthony Joyce, Jr. He leaves behind his sisters, Jean Schroeder and Carol Bielert, daughters, Carol Kathleen Stutzman (Charles) and Christine Marie Davies (Bryan), son
Robert James Joyce and daughters Carin Noel Joyce and Carrie Michelle Kidwell (Brandon).
His grandchildren: Tyler Kalbfleisch, Jacob Stutzman, Christopher Davies, Delaney Davies,
Cassandra Nelson, Fionna Winslade, Liam Joyce, James Joyce, Milo Joyce, Ari Joyce, Morgan Joyce, Jack Joyce, Alexander King, Ava King, and six Great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer for family and friends.
