Richard "Dick" DeWayne Smith Sr., of Thompsonville, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Copemish, the son of Lawrence and Beverly (Carpenter) Smith.

Dick was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Copemish.

He worked as a mason and worked hard to provide for his family. Dick enjoyed spending time on the farm and kept busy tending to his horses. He loved playing the guitar and watching the Detroit Tigers.

On Sept. 2, 1961, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, in Copemish, Dick married Florence Schroeter, who survives him. He is also survived by: his children, Richard "Rick" (Amy) Smith Jr. of Copemish, William "Bill" Smith of Nessen City, Kathy (Bill Humphrey) Gray of Copemish and Robert "Bob" (Jennifer) Smith of Copemish; grandchildren, Kile (Christina) Smith, Jason (Lizzie) Gray, Callie (Daniel) Karner, and Alyssa Smith; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Declan, and Florence "Renn" Karner and Theo and Finnley Smith; siblings, Rita Minteer, Betty Wilks, Ellsworth "Butch" Morris, Susie Krueger, Peggy (David) Witkop, and Joann Guerra; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

The Smith family would like to thank the nurses of Munson Hospice for the care and compassion they showed to Dick and his family.

A Mass at St. Raphael Catholic Church, in Copemish, will be announced at a later date.
