Rita C. (Peplinski) Gomes


Rita Clementyne Gomes, 89, passed away peacefully in Redmond, Oregon, on Sunday. August 4, 2019.
She arrived in this world on September 17, 1929 in Cedar, the youngest of 13 children born to Stanislaus "S.J." and Mary (Darga) Peplinski.
She is survived by her children, Paul D. O'Brien, Robert O'Brien and Susan (Brian) Yates, of Oregon, Mark (Pam) O'Brien, Marguerite "Peggy" (Dennis) Berthiaume and James (Marina) O'Brien, of California, and Judi (Steven) Swan, of Traverse City; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister, Margaret Skeba; two sisters-in-law, Hilda and Betty; and more than a hundred nieces and nephews.
Rita graduated valedictorian of the class of 1946 at the age of 16. A few years passed, then she married Paul S. O'Brien. They had seven children and lived throughout the United States. Later, she wed Arthur Gomes, and they resided in San Carlos, California, where she worked for and retired from the County of San Mateo.
Rita enjoyed playing bridge, dancing and traveling. Wherever Rita lived throughout her life, the one constant that she lived for was her great love of the Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by Paul S. O'Brien and Arthur Gomes; brothers, Edwin, Clemence, Stanley, John and Benedict; sisters, Elizabeth Zielinski, Sophie Laskey, Leona Kasben, Eugenia Lawson, Suzanne Garthe and Theresa Peplinski; and grandson, Andrew Swan.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to Mass, on Sept. 17 at St. Mary's Church. In following Rita's final wishes, interment of her ashes will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Cedar.

Dear family. So sorry for the news. The last time we were with your mum, we went to a favorite (of hers) restaurant in SF area, and she was so full of life. Just so great to be in her company. I REALLY recall the time I visited when I was in the military in Calif.. drove my stick shift chevy up to your home and visited with all you ¨little ones (uncle Paul and Aunt Rita were so welcoming and kind to this ¨guy just off the farm in Cedar¨!! Lovely family, you all..we have so much to be thankful eh? Kathleen and I are in Spain at present, but
we´ll be keeping you all in our thoughts. sorry we can´t be with you all at the celebration of your mum,s life. Much love, peace, jt, K
