Robert "Rennie" Bacon, age 89, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 17, 2017. He was born on July 19, 1927, to Jabez and Alice (Flaherty) Bacon in Ferndale. He married the former Marilyn Vivier in 1949, in Farmington and they enjoyed 67 years together.

Rennie touched the lives of many students and players while being a teacher, coach and principal, especially his coaching years at Traverse City Central. A huge sports fan, Rennie was a player, coach and spectator, and still attended Michigan State University football games both home and away. Rennie's passions were fishing, golfing and reading. Known as "Grandpa Bum," Rennie enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and kept a unique relationship with each of his kids. While Rennie lived in a number of cities, Empire will always and forever hold his heart and spirit.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children, Scott (Donna) Bacon, Jim (Marilyn) Bacon, Wendy (Gary) Merkey, and Tony Bacon; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Karen Bacon.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rennie Guy; two brothers; and two sisters; and parents.

A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, March 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231)798-1100.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
