Traverse City, Michigan - Robert (Bob) DeVere Schoonover, 85, of Traverse City passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Munson Hospice House. Bob was born April 8, 1940 to Arthur and Viola (Hendrie) Schoonover in Saginaw, MI. Bob attended Saginaw's Arthur Hill High School where his extracurricular activities centered around music and he excelled at playing the twelve-string guitar. He carried his love of music to Central Michigan College in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he started his own swing band while earning his Bachelor's degree in cost accounting. He then furthered his education in accounting by earning a Master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. He married Marilyn Jeannine Engstrom (LeRoy, Michigan) on November 7, 1959 in Tustin, MI. He began his career as a Chrysler executive in Oak Park, Michigan followed by a controller position for Chef Pierre in Traverse City in 1967. From there he worked as a college professor at University of Arizona while pursuing a doctorate degree. Bob continued working as a business accountant and consultant for many years for the companies Peninsula Asphalt, C-Land Excavating, and George S. May International. He was also the President and Founder of three entities: Good News Media/WLJN Christian Radio, Tailored Systems Business Accounting Software, and Smart Business Solutions Business Consulting. In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed hunting and the occasional round of golf. Bob was known for being stern but kind, and always fair. A man of strong Christian faith, Bob graduated from, and was ordained through, Faith Tech Ministries in 1985. Bob and his wife were passionate about the mission field and shared their love of the gospel of Jesus; travelling extensively in the Philippines where they forged strong relationships with many families. Bob is survived by sons Bob (Betsy) Schoonover, Hans (Kirstin) Schoonover, Kelly (Kristen) Schoonover; and 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn; sister Nancy Piper; and his parents. In accordance with his wishes, no funeral services will be held. A memorial will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 from 11am to 3pm at Historic Hertha Hall in Elk Rapids, Michigan.
