Sister Anne Monica Shalda, O.P. (born Della Irene Shalda in Maple City), died on July 21, 2016. She was 72 years old and a Dominican Sister for 54 years.

Sister Anne Monica's early years as a Dominican Sister were spent in food service ministry until she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Aquinas College and began her ministry as an educator.

Sister served for 10 years as a teacher in Bay City, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Alma. She later ministered in religious education programs at St. John Baptist, Alpena and Guardian Angels, Manistee. Her last ministry assignment was at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Grand Rapids, where she served as a pastoral volunteer, visiting parishioners in their homes and bringing them Communion and comfort and song.

Sister Anne Monica is survived by her sister, Monica (Chad) Evans, of Honor; her brothers, Larry Shalda, of Muskegon, Len Shalda, of Empire, and Louis (Carmen) Shalda, of Rockford; Mary Louise Graham of N. Muskegon, (close family connection); and many friends and members of her Dominican Sisters-Grand Rapids Community.

Sister Anne Monica will repose at Dominican Chapel/Marywood, 2025 Fulton Street East, with visitation today, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m., and a remembering service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 25, at Dominican Chapel/Marywood. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorials in Sister Anne Monica's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
