Scottsdale, AZ - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Stanley John Szwalek Jr., known as Stan, who passed away May 17, 2026, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 81.

Stan completed both his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan. His medical training continued through an internship and residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, followed by a Nephrology Fellowship at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit.

Dr. Szwalek's established a dialysis unit at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac, Michigan, and expanded the dialysis facility in Traverse City.

Stan served his country with honor, enlisting in the United States Army for two years at Fort Benning, Georgia.

He loved collecting and listening to classical records, classical books, and attending the theater.

His passions included playing the violin, downhill skiing, and sailing.

He survived by his loving wife, Maureen Szwalek; children, Kathleen, Laura (Tom), Stanley John (Jamie), and Theresa (Dane); grandchildren, Aaron, Ben, Sofia, Viktor, Clark, Teddy, and Henry; and his sister, Linda Braun.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley John Szwalek Sr. and Laura Szwalek (née Bujnarowski).

Stan will lay In-state on May 27, 2026, from 10:30 until the 11a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Malachy Catholic Church, 14115 East 14 Mile Road, Sterling Heights, Michigan. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township, Michigan.
